4 Key Pantry Items for a Healthy Heart

As we wrap up Heart Health Month, we thought we would share some pantry-friendly foods and recipes that can keep your heart healthy all year long. So, this week we are focusing on magnesium-rich, foods that play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy heart, and (bonus!) they are easy to store in your pantry so you always have them on hand.

Magnesium itself is a heart healthy powerhouse of a mineral that is needed for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. These include muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. When you incorporate magnesium-rich, pantry-friendly foods like pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans, and dark chocolate into your daily diet, you can support your heart health while enjoying delicious and nutritious meals.

  1. Pumpkin Seeds are the highest food source of magnesium! Sprinkle them on salads, soups, or yogurt, or enjoy a handful for a crunchy and nutritious snack.
  2. Almonds are not only crunchy and satisfying but also packed with magnesium. Enjoy a handful of almonds as a snack, add them to your morning oatmeal or yogurt, or use almond flour in baking for a heart-healthy treat.
  3. Black Beans are a versatile bean that provides a substantial amount of magnesium. Incorporate them into soups, stews, tacos, or salads for a delicious and heart-healthy boost of fiber and nutrients.
  4. Dark chocolate can be good for your heart, especially when it's high in cocoa content. Choose dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa and enjoy it in moderation as a satisfying and magnesium-rich treat.

Make it a priority this week to add these heart-healthy foods to your pantry and incorporate them into your meals to keep your heart healthy all year long.
