Eat Sustainably on Earth Day (and everyday!)

As Earth Day approaches, it's a perfect time to reflect on the impact your food choices have on the planet. Adopting a sustainable diet can play a significant role in protecting our environment for future generations. So, how can you eat sustainably while still nourishing your body with the key nutrients it needs? We have ideas!

Sustainability is a crucial aspect of protecting our planet's health. The food industry has a substantial environmental footprint, contributing to issues like deforestation, habitat destruction, and greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing sustainable foods, you can help reduce these impacts and promote a healthier planet.

Embrace Plant-Based Meals

Plant-based foods generally have a lower environmental impact than animal products. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains into your diet to reduce your carbon footprint.

Choose Locally-Sourced Foods

Supporting local farmers not only boosts the economy but also reduces the carbon emissions associated with transportation. Visit farmers' markets or join a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program to access fresh, locally grown produce.

Reduce Food Waste

Approximately one-third of all food produced globally is wasted. Minimize waste by planning meals, storing food properly, and repurposing leftovers. Add overripe fruits to smoothies or use vegetable scraps to make a homemade broth.

Purchase Fish Sustainably

When shopping for seafood, look for the following:

  • Certifications: Seek out labels indicating sustainable practices, such as MSC or ASC certification.
  • Local Options: Choose fish caught or farmed locally to reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

Nutrients in Fish: B12 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fish is not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients like vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for maintaining optimal health.

  • Vitamin B12: This water-soluble vitamin helps keep your body’s blood and nerve cells healthy and also helps make DNA. While commonly found in animal products, including fish, B12 is also available in fortified plant-based foods like nutritional yeast and fortified plant milks.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3s are known for their heart-protective benefits, reducing inflammation, promoting brain health, joint health and slowing aging.  Aim to eat fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines 2-3 times per week or consider supplementation.
